No Gi Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Training in Louisville KY
Our No Gi Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training includes a lot of takedowns. In fact, Wednesdays have recently become a sort of Wrestling for BJJ class. During the class we go over several techniques from Wrestling or take down related movements that can be used in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.

Whether you’re talking about an Mixed Martial Arts fight, or a Real fight on the streets. Having the ability to takedown your opponent or attacker is huge. Especially in a real fight. You know what happens when you get slammed onto concrete? You don’t want to fight much anymore.
Even in BJJ competition. Takedowns are huge. They let you control the stand up battle. Even if you don’t use them often, you still want to have the ability to do so.

We Have Crossfit
In addition to having a MMA gym that will build up athletes and non athletes alike. We also have a Crossfit gym attached so that you can develop your strength and conditioning. The name of our Crossfit affiliate is Grindhouse Crossfit. Like the rest of the programs in our gym. We have some people who are athletes while others are not.
Even if you don’t want to do Crossfit. You can also use our weight training area during non class times to work on your strength training. Many of our members just enjoy working out and use the weights during non class times to exercise.

Can a Meathead MMA gym and children’s Martial Arts mix?
This is the question one of our member’s father asked himself before bringing his son into Derby City MMA for our children’s Martial Arts classes.
Like many parents, he was interested in getting his son Conley into Martial Arts training as a means to build his confidence and physical abilities. When he first brought his son into Derby City MMA he was nervous. It seemed like a good place but he had the idea that it was a bunch of meatheads training.

This past weekend Derby City’s head BJJ coach Nick “Chewy” Albin won at the BJJ Kumite in Murfreesboro, TN. During the finals match Chewy put on a good display of what Louisville Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has to offer.
The BJJ Kumite tournament that was held in Tennessee had some of the top competition in the region competing for bragging rights and a cash prize.
During the finals match he used a combination of grip fighting, takedowns and top pressure passing to keep his opponent grounded and gain the victory. His opponent who was very tough put up a good defense and didn’t give much ground. By the end of the exciting match, both competitors were spent.
During the event, Chad Hardy (the assistant head coach) also pushed his way into the semi finals but was forced to withdraw following a broken toe. Up until that point he had put on a great showing winning 2 matches by submission.
There are several Louisville Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gyms. But Derby City has long had the largest and most active competition team in the area. Lead from the front by all of their coaches.

Here is a short highlight of some of the Louisville Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training at Derby City MMA.
This is just a normal day during one of our advanced classes of BJJ training. This was a moderate level training class.
During the BJJ training class I urged the students to push themselves. We were only rolling for 18 minutes total (3 rounds of 6 minutes with 30 seconds rest). So really is not that much rolling. Most people who’ve trained Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for any length of time can do that.
But what I wanted them to get from it was the idea of sprinting. Instead of conserving energy and constantly preparing for the next round. Open up and go full speed to the best of your abilities for 6 minutes. Then do it again and again.
I wanted the students to push themselves. To get to the point where their body was tired and they were huffing and puffing.

A lot of times in our training. We might feel like we are hitting our max capacity. Often though, we are only using a fraction of what we are capable of.

7 Ways To Prepare For 1st Boxing Class in Louisville
Louisville is a town with a rich history of Boxing. Because Louisville is a bit a of a Boxing town. Our Boxing program is always filled with enthusiastic newcomers. Ready to try their hand at the sweet science.
The majority of the people that walk through our doors to do a Boxing class have no prior boxing experience. And that lack of knowledge can be intimidating.
When people think of Boxing gyms. Most imagine a crusty Boxing gym from the movies. Where your first day is welcome by a 12 round sparring session in the ring. Not much of a beginners Boxing class.
At Derby City MMA we totally understand that most people who want to get into the sport don’t actually know anything about it. They’ve watched it on tv. Maybe they we’re inspired by a movie or a fight to start training. But they’re brand new!
Because of this, we offer beginner classes and give both the option of fitness boxing in the form of cardio bag classes. Meanwhile, we offer fighters separate classes and give them a chance to develop their skills for a fight in the ring.
So with that in mind, I’ve prepared this short guide to help you prepare for your first Boxing class in Louisville, Ky.
Prepare For Your First Boxing Class in Louisville
Stop worrying! This is most people’s problem. They get so worked up and worried. Trust me, there is nothing to worry about. No one is in here to beat you up. Our coaches are ready to build you up, regardless of experience. Whether you want to be a fighter or just get in better shape.
Be hydrated. Boxing is great work out. If you haven’t been super active recently, it’s ok. Just make sure to be prepared. You can do this by staying hydrated during the day and making sure not to eat a large meal right before you get to the gym. If you’re not sure what to eat. Try a piece of fruit an hour or so before training for energy without being too heavy on the stomach.
What to wear? People ask this all the time. Again, don’t get hung up on the small things. When you come into the gym to start boxing. Just wear clothes you’re comfortable working out in. Most men wear shorts and a t shirt and women often wear shorts / yoga pants and a shirt.
Do I need any equipment for my 1st Boxing Class? No equipment is needed. We’ll provide you with a set of boxing gloves to wear for your first visit.
What to expect when you walk in to Derby City. When you arrive. You’ll be greeted by one of our staff working the front desk. From there you’ll sign a waiver and we’ll introduce you to the coaches and get you on the mats with us.
How tough is the workout? If you’re worried about the workout being too much for you. Don’t worry. While our coaches will push you. We will never ask you to do anything you can’t or don’t feel comfortable doing. We’ve helped people all shapes and sizes get into the best shape of their lives in a control and safe manner.
Is there an age limit? No. We have people as young as 5 doing our kids kickboxing classes and we have adults into their 70s working out. Again, everything can be adjusted to meet your needs.

I’ve had several students over the years tell me that they can’t relax after working out. They will complain that they are unable to sleep after working out or training. Recently I had one of the students say that he can’t fall asleep and it’s the biggest challenge he faces in regards to training.
I think we’ve all experienced this before. After working out. You get home and you’re mind is still racing and your body is still in a heightened state and you just can’t relax.
You might even feel this way and find yourself unable to relax after a rough day at work.
Whatever the reason. In this video, I show a technique you can do from home to help relax after working out. It’s been great when I can’t sleep after BJJ training or when I have a ton of stuff racing through my mind. Many of the members inside the gym say that it’s been helpful for them as well.
The technique in the video is all about breathing. It’s a simple way to train your body to develop the ability to breathe into your stomach which can have a calming effect on your body and mind. If you’ve ever done Yoga. Think about how relaxing the end of the session can be. When you lay down and focus only on the breathe. It has a way of clearing your head and leaving your body more relaxed.
So, if you’re someone who struggles with sleeping following an intense training session. Whether that is Brazilian Jiu jitsu, CrossFit, MMA or Boxing. Give the simple technique I show in this video a try and see if it helps. Hopefully it will help you relax after working out as it does for myself and many others inside our gym.
